최근 OpenAI 사에서 선보인 챗GPT의 열풍이 전세계를 뜨겁게 달구고 있습니다. 만년 2위 검색엔진, 게다가 시장 점유율도 매우 낮아 경쟁 상대로도 보기 어려운 마이크로소프트의 검색엔진 빙(Bing). 마이크로소프트가 챗GPT에 투자를 하여, 자신들의 검색엔진 Bing에 이 챗GPT를 활용할 것이라는 것이 알려지며 검색엔진 시장에 큰 반향을 불러일으켰습니다.

아니, 챗봇이 나왔다는데 왜 구글의 검색엔진 이야기를 하냐구요? 챗GPT(Generative Pre-trained Transformer)가 검색엔진이 수행하는 가장 근본적인 역할을 더 광범위하게 게다가 사람과 같은 언어의 형태로 할 수 있기 때문입니다.

기존의 구글과 같은 검색엔진은 특정 검색어에 대한 응답으로 사용자에게 관련 정보의 예시를 출처와 함께 제공하도록 설계되었습니다. 반면, 챗GPT는 마치 사람이 말하듯 사용자에게 대화의 형태로 답변을 제공하죠. 그 뿐만 아니라 챗GPT는 생성형 AI 기술로 새로운 콘텐츠를 생성할 수 있다는 점이 많은 주목을 받고 있죠.

지금 가장 열정적으로 챗GPT를 비롯한 생성형 AI의 발전 추이를 지켜보는 이들은 단연 '투자자'들이겠지만, 워낙 많은 범위에 적용 혹은 남용/오용 될 수 있는 기술이기에 각 분야에서도 지대한 관심을 보이고 있습니다.

대체 생성형 AI는 뭐고, ChatGPT는 이전의 챗봇 혹은 검색엔진과 뭐가 그리 다르길래 이렇게 시장을 흔들어 놓게 된걸까요?

맥킨지에 따르면 생성형 인공지능, Generative AI(생성형 AI)는 음성, 코드, 이미지, 텍스트, 비디오 등을 포함하여 새로운 콘텐츠를 생성하는 데 사용할 수 있는 알고리즘을 뜻합니다. 그 예시가 바로 챗GPT이구요.

ChatGPT와 같은 생성형 AI 기술은 컴퓨터로 하여금 머신 러닝을 바탕으로 글부터 음악, 예술, 그리고 가상 세계에 이르기까지 모든 종류의 콘텐츠를 생성할 수 있게 해줍니다. 단순히 묻는 질문에 대답하는 것을 넘어서 새로운 제품 디자인, 비즈니스 프로세스 최적화와 같이 실용적인 용도로 사용될 수 있다고 해요.

국내에서는 현지 검색엔진인 네이버의 사용률이 아직까지 매우 높은 편입니다. 하지만 글로벌 환경에서는 대부분의 국가가 구글 검색엔진을 사용하고 있습니다. 그래서 마케팅을 하는 사람이라면 검색엔진최적화 (SEO)에 대한 지식이 필수적입니다. 물론 비용을 지불하여 타겟 키워드가 검색되었을 때 우리 사이트를 더 좋은 위치에 보여줄 수도 있겠지만 광고비라는 제약이 있습니다. 그래서 특히 중소기업이라면 예산이 적기 때문에 오가닉하게 검색 결과에 내 사이트를 더 상단에 노출시키는 것이 비즈니스의 결과와 직결됩니다.

또한 앞서 말씀 드렸듯 챗GPT의 콘텐츠 생성 능력 때문에 콘텐츠 마케팅을 하는 다양한 비즈니스와 마케터(콘텐츠 마케터, 카피라이터 등)들 역시 챗GPT에 위협을 느낄 수 밖에 없는 상황입니다.

챗GPT가 아직까지는 영어만큼 한국어를 잘 처리하지 못하기에 국내에서는 아직까지 큰 반응이 없을지도 모르겠습니다. 카카오에서 개발 중이라고 밝힌 한국어용 챗봇이 등장한다면 곧 이야기가 달라지겠지만요.

영국에서 영어를 활용하여 업무를 하고 있는 현업 마케터이기에 실무에 한번 적용해보고 여러분과 그 후기를 공유해보면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그렇다고 억지로 후기를 위해 사용해 본 것은 아니구요! 최근 조직이 변경되면서 기존 팀원을 잃고 새로운 팀원을 채용하는 인력 공백기를 맞이했어요. 저 혼자 모든 실무를 해야하는 시기를 보내며 도저히 일처리할 시간이 나지 않아 '이런 업무는 챗GPT로 하면 어떨까?'하는 아이디어가 떠올랐답니다.

그래서, 그 주에 꼭 해야했던 성격이 조금 다른 두가지 업무를 ChatGPT에게 시켜보았어요!

예상과 달리 결과물의 차이는 꽤 많이 났습니다. 어떤 태스크 결과물에 대한 만족도가 더 높았을까요?🤔

챗GPT의 사용법은 정말 쉬웠습니다. OpenAI 사이트(https://chat.openai.com/chat)에 접속하여 구글 계정을 연동하여 가입을 마치고 나니 바로 질문을 입력할 수 있는 창이 떴습니다.

처음 지시는 아래와 같이 조금 모호했습니다.

Please write a job description for a digital marketing manager. This person will manage various digital channels including social media, paid media, SEO, chatbot and community groups and explore new channels to generate leads by promoting our content.

그럼에도 불구하고 알아서 직무 기술서의 형태로 처음과 끝이 명확한 기술서가 완성되었어요. 여기에 제가 추가로 포함하고 싶은 정보를 조금 덧붙여 아래와 같은 조금 더 긴 지시를 해보았습니다.

• Please write a job description for a digital marketing channel manager. We are looking for all rounded digital marketer who has experiences in various digital channels such as social media, paid media (search, social and display), SEO, chatbot, communities, webinars, content syndication and more.

• This person will own, manage and explore digital channels from end to end in order to generate leads and pipeline.

왠지 아쉬움이 좀 많이 남았습니다. 너무 일반적이고 재미없는 카피라이팅이었습니다. 사실을 기반으로 하고 있지만 굳이 없어도 될 내용들, 다소 일반적인 내용들이 이메일 공간을 채우기 위해 더해진 것 같은 느낌이 들었습니다.

이전 버전보다는 정보 전달 측면에서는 더 좋아진 것 같습니다. 그럼에도 이전에 계속해서 보내왔던 마케팅 이메일의 톤앤매너와 맞추기가 상당히 어렵더라구요. 짧지만 강력한 도입부, 위트있지만 여전히 예의있는 카피라이팅, 불렛포인트나 이모지를 활용한 구성 등등.. 이메일은 생각보다 원하는 스타일의 콘텐츠를 얻기위해 고려해야 할 변수들이 많더라구요.

결국, 다른 이메일 프로젝트를 작업하고 있던 카피라이터에게 이 작업이 다시 되돌아 갔다는 후문!

결론

직접 사용해보니 (현재의 버전 기준) ChatGPT가 더 잘 수행하는 종류의 태스크가 있는 것은 확실해 보였습니다. 아직까지는 창의력을 필요로 하거나 결과물의 범위가 넓을 수 있는 일 (예를 들어 카피라이팅) 보다는 결과물의 대략적 형식이 정해져있거나 '리서치 후 정리'에 가까운 일의 결과물이 더 만족스럽다고 느꼈습니다.

업무 시간에 위 실험을 하면서 어떤 시간대에는 사용자가 몰려서 기다렸다가 해야하는 상황도 있었습니다. 미국과 영국 등의 국가에서는 이런 상황에서 더 우선적으로 서비스를 이용할 수 있는 프리미엄 버전이 출시 되었는데요. 한달 사용료는 20달러로 그렇게 비싼 편은 아닙니다만 아직까지는 결과물의 한계도 명확하여 얼마나 많은 '마케터'들이 유료 버전으로 갈아탈지 모르겠습니다.

제가 다니는 회사를 IT 직군을 대상으로 플랫폼과 서비스를 판매하는데요. 타겟 오디언스가 개발자이다 보니 그들이 관심있어하는 콘텐츠를 자주 보게됩니다. 챗GPT가 지시에 따라 자바스크립트 코드를 금방 작성하는 영상이 바이럴되어 엄청난 조회수를 기록했었는데요. 마케팅 뿐 아니라 프로그래밍, 제품 개발, 행정 등 다양한 분야에 활용될 수 있는 무궁무진한 가능성이 있다는 것만큼은 사실인 것 같습니다.

구글이 챗GPT에 대항하는 챗봇 Bard를 성급하게 발표하게 만들고, 오래동안 시장을 떠나있던 야후가 다시 검색 시장으로 돌아오게 하고, 마이크로소프트의 Bing이 업계 1위 구글에게 도전장을 내밀게 한 챗GPT의 등장. 마케터로서 그리고 테크 덕후로서 이 흥미진진한 스토리가 앞으로 어떤 방향으로 전개가 될지 매우 궁금해집니다!
